Fundamentals of Emergent Process

A primer for perceiving and engaging in groups

This course is intended to support you in making a difference in the groups in which you are engaged.

All groups operate on a deliberate-emergent continuum. The deliberate is spelled out. The emergent is mysterious and can appear to be free form, yet it has its own structures which are less immediately obvious. This primer is an opportunity to take a concerted look at this phenomenon.

Firstly, the primacy of the ‘space’ from which an individual speaks and acts will be underscored. As we proceed, you will become acquainted with a variety of structural models that are helpful for discerning what is going on in a given group, as well as for effecting actions that create, enhance or recover a group’s functionality.

We will also examine certain assumptions and patterns that are embedded in and play out in groups. By becoming aware of assumptions and subtextual elements at play in groups, we open a door to another level of perception when engaging.

By the completion of this course, each participant will be able to put together a ‘dashboard’ of instruments and insights that can act as a reference tool to help monitor the condition of a group, and to navigate and productively contribute within it.
